About this Recipe

By: Dr. Behar

This is a delicious and easy cake to make for your sweethearts! My mother used to make this for us when I was growing up and every year I look forward to making it for my children.

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1.5 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup butter milk

For the strawberry filing:

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 10oz packages frozen strawberries
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

Powdered sugar for dusting

Allergy note: This recipe is soy and nut free.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Sift together dry ingredients except sugars. Cream together butter and sugar, then add eggs and vanilla. Beat until fluffy.

Step 2

Stir in dry ingredients and beat till well blended.Spread into a well greased and floured 9″ non-stick cake pan.

Step 3

Bake at 325 degrees for 45-50 minutes. Cool on wire rack for 15 minutes, remove from pan and cool completely.

Step 4

Cut a heart shape out of paper. Place heart shape on cake and dust the cake with powdered sugar to make the heart shape impression on the cake. Remove paper. Use this as a guide to cut a shallow (1/2″) heart shape out of the center of the cake. Heart shape should reach to about 1″ from cake edge. Break removed cake pieces into large crumbs. Set aside.

Step 5

For filling, combine sugar and cornstarch in pan. Stir in thawed berries and juice. Cook on medium heat until thickened and clear. Add lemon juice and cool. Fill the cutout of the cake. Place the cake crumbs on top and dust with more powdered sugar.
